Company E, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division. "The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Arthur W. Carley, Jr. (MCSN: 0-19986), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, on 7 March 1945. Although seriously wounded when his company had become disorganized and had suffered heavy casualties from an intense enemy mortar barrage, First Lieutenant Carley repeatedly exposed himself to hostile fire in order to reorganize the company and evacuate the casualties. In so doing, he received a second and extremely critical wound but refused to be evacuated until his casualties had been treated and his company reorganized to carry out its mission. His courageous fighting spirit and utter disregard for his own safety reflect the highest credit upon First Lieutenant Carley and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country." Photographer: Ragus. |
