Summary
editDescriptionFirst Methodist Church, Corning, New York - 20220205 - 02.jpg |
English: First United Methodist Church, 144 Cedar Street at East 1st Street, Corning, New York, February 2022. Henry G. Tuthill is the designer of this striking Richardsonian Romanesque church building that was completed in 1894 after nearly two years of construction, and with its stout and ponderous massing, ruddy exterior of red brick and terra cotta, multitudinous round-arched windows that come principally in pairs and trios (and, under the large rose window at the center of the façade, a sextet) interspersed with Corinthian columns, and the stubby pyramidal roofs atop its towers, it's a fine demonstration of the aesthetic. Notice also the elegant arched moldings above the rose windows. Appropriately given its name, First Methodist was indeed the first congregation in Corning to adhere to the denomination of Methodism, founded in 1839. The present building is the third to house the congregation, and is a contributing property (and is cited on the accompanying documentation as a principal gateway to) the NRHP-listed Southside Historic District. |
