Summary
editDescriptionFirst United Methodist Church, Westfield, New York - 20210604.jpg |
English: First United Methodist Church, 101 East Main Street, Westfield, New York, June 2021. A contributing property to the NRHP-listed French Portage Road Historic District, First Methodist is architecturally significant as a blending of two different Gothic Revival substyles, the product of an extensive renovation subsequent to the building's to 1872 completion. The original High Victorian Gothic style is still exemplified by the asymmetry of the two towers, overall heavy massing, and especially the stark color contrasts on the façade, with light-colored stone trim set against darker brick. This iteration of the building included only a single tower at the left side of the façade, crowned by an imposing steeple; the aforementioned renovation was undertaken in 1908 to address structural deficiencies in the tower which was found to be beyond repair, and so it was replaced with the newer, Late Gothic Revival-style twin towers seen today, with a motif of ogee arches in the belfry contrasting with the simpler pointed Gothic arches elsewhere, and flat roofs ringed by crenellated parapets in place of spires. First Methodist Church was founded in 1821 and worshiped in two previous buildings before the construction of the current one: the first constructed in 1822 on the west side of the village on the property of one Dr. Richmond, who was a physician and surgeon as well as the church's pastor at the time, and the second in 1850 which was located on Clinton Street across from what's now the municipal parking lot. |
