For many of the artists in Bombay towards the end of the 19th century, fishermen and women were among the more striking inhabitants of the growing metropolis, visible on the long shorelines, sketched and painted frequently. Dhurandhar, from the time he was a young student at the J.J. School of Art was no exception, and made numerous watercolors of fisherfolk, including this early postcard where line alignment of the mast or fishing pole in the background and the shovel frame help draw attention to the man's gaze outward.
