Português: Planta de Pinus herrrerae que sucumbiu a morte e permaneceu em pé. Entre a casca e o lenho há um manto de raízes das plantas adjacentes metros acima do nível do solo.
English: Phytocannibalism - Mantle of exposed roots. Pinus herrrerae plant that succumbed to death and remained standing. Between the bark and the wood there is a mantle of roots of the adjacent plants meters above ground level.
"Phytocannibalism"? Researchers describe how pines "feed" on trees that stand for years after death.
Named by the researchers "phytocannibalism", a phenomenon was identified in a pine plantation in the region of Campos Gerais, in Paraná. The situation stems from the low fertility of the soil, which causes trees to look for nutrients in trunks still standing of plants in a state of decomposition.
