Description
Português: Thesouro de Nobreza, Armas do Estado do Brasil (folha 10).

12 shields in 4 rows, top to bottom, left to right, as numbered in illustration:

  • 1 (top row):
    • 1: Arms of the Religion of Santo Eloy (Saint Eligius, Bishop of Noyon). The charitable fraternity of the Confrérie des Charitables de Saint-Éloi / Confraternity of Saint Éloi, known in English as the Charitable Brothers of Saint Eloi. According to legend, the fraternity was formed in 1188, during a plague. Two blacksmiths had an apparition of St Eloi, whom Christians believe is the protector of metal workers and other craft workers. He ordered the two men to start a brotherhood to bury the dead.
    • 2: Arms of the Religion of Santo Hieronimo (Saint Jerome). With cardinal's hat above. Saint Jerome was often painted dressed in cardinal’s robes, as recognition of his high status in the Catholic Church, even though the office did not exist during his lifetime
    • 3: Arms of the Religion of Santo Joao de Deus (Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God). São João de Deus, de seu nome João Cidade (Montemor-o-Novo, 8 de março de 1495 – Granada, 8 de março de 1550) foi um religioso católico português. A Portuguese soldier turned health-care worker in Spain, whose followers later formed the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God, a worldwide Catholic religious institute dedicated to the care of the poor, sick, and those with mental disorders. He has been canonized by the Catholic Church, and is considered one of the leading religious figures in the Iberian Peninsula.

    • 11: Arms of the Isle of Funchal (now Madeira): Azure, a sugar cane stalk erect proper overall five sugar loaves proper 2,1,2
    • 12: Arms of the Isle of Terceira (Azores): Argent, a Cross of Christ (cross potent formy voided) gules in base dexter and sinister a falcon (goshawk) rising combattant proper. These appear in fact to be the w:Coat of arms of Madeira, not the w:Coat of arms of the Azores (today Argent, a goshawk displayed azure, beaked, langued, taloned and armed gules, a bordure gules, charged with nine mullets of five points or). The Cross of the Order of Christ (today featuring in the coat of arms of Madeira) alludes to the following historical facts: The archipelago of Madeira was discovered by two knights of the Household Henry the Navigator, who was Grand Master of the Military Order of Christ: João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira; becoming therefore a symbol of connection with Portugal. Since its discovery, the archipelago was property of the Order of Christ, which promoted its settlement (only in the reign of D. Manuel the archipelago of Madeira was called to the direct possession of the Portuguese Crown). Early Portuguese visitors to the Azores mistook the local variety of buzzard, Buteo buteo rothschildi, for goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) and the Portuguese word for "goshawk", açor (pl. açores), is the root of the islands' name. Goshawks also remain a common motif in Azorean heraldry and vexillology.
