Summary

Description
English: Flame structure at Lochranza harbour On a very rocky beach next to the ferry port there is a rock. Just above the pencil (a scale) you can see a chalk outline. This is a flame structure.

They form when sediment is put on top of another sediment and some goes into the other sediment. Eg. when you tread on sand the sand goes through your toes.

This is a 'way up' structure as it tells you what way the sediments were originally. Another example of a way up structure is a tree stump. If you find it upside down then you know the beds have been over turned.
