Description

c/n 28368, l/n V-10.

The Kolibri (Hummingbird) is believed to be the world’s first series production helicopter, with 24 being built between 1942 and 1945. It had intermeshing rotor blades, which is also known as a synchropter.

Post-war, the designer Anton Flettner went on to form Kaman Aircraft in the USA and produced other Synchropters including the well known H-43 Huskie, which the museum also has a currently well hidden example of.

The identity of this example has also been quoted as 280020 / V-20, with the code CJ+SN. Comments on the subject welcomed!

The only other known survivor is V-23, which is (was?) part of the National Museum of the USAF, Dayton, Ohio.

Currently in the process of a cosmetic restoration to create a rear fuselage and tail feathers, this rare survivor is seen in the Midland Air Museum’s restoration hangar.

Coventry Airport, UK.
