Description

Quehanna Wild Area, Moshannon State Forest, Clearfield County.

The Allegheny Plateau region of north-central Pennsylvania was once called the Black Forest because of its abundant, dense stands of virgin hemlocks, white pines, and northern hardwoods. Most of the forest was logged off by the early twentieth century. Only isolated pockets of the forest were spared, often because of difficult-to-access terrain or property-boundary disputes.

White pines were highly prized for timber. Their massive stumps—most of which are now a century or more old—are found throughout the area.
