LUMUT, Malaysia (June 19, 2012) Navy Diver 1st Class Fernando Hernani, assigned to Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 1 conducts pre-dive equipment checks during a joint diving exercise aboard the Military Sealift Command rescue and salvage ship USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50) for Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Malaysia 2012. CARAT is a series of bilateral military exercises between the U.S. Navy and the armed forces of Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Timor Leste joins the exercise for the first time in 2012.
