B. Henry Latrobe was hired by President Jefferson in 1803 to fill the position of "Surveyor of Public Buildings," with the principal responsibility of constructing the Capitol’s south wing. He is honored as the second Architect of the Capitol Portrait of Benjamin Henry Latrobe George B. Matthews, after C. W. Peale Oil on canvas, 29-1/2" x 24-1/2" 1931 This official Architect of the Capitol photograph is being made available for educational, scholarly, news or personal purposes (not advertising or any other commercial use).
