I have seen this kind of bare patch over on Umtanum Ridge in the Yakima area, which seemed to consist mainly of Pediocactus simpsonii - and I also found a large ant colony there. It would have been interesting to explore this patch. I wonder what the cause of these patches is? As a sidenote - I really noticed the contrast of this patch from the photo - don't believe I caught this when we were driving down Brewton Road. A good reason to go back. Pediocactus, Echinocereus and Echinopsis species are often called Hedgehog cactus, after the Hedgehogi090708 143 |
