Description
English: Built in 1859-1860, this Italianate-style house was built by Robert W. Johnson, and was inhabited for the first ten years by Chemistry professor John LeConte, whom moved to the University of California in 1870. The house was originally much closer to Sumter Street and had a detached kitchen, carriage house, and slave quarters to the rear, all of which have been demolished. The building features a painted brick exterior, a hipped roof, gabled dormers, six-over-six and six-over-twelve double-hung windows, bracketed eaves, a front porch with stop-chamfered columns, wooden balustrades, a cornice with modillions, and decorative trimwork, a front door with a transom and sidelights, and a one-story bay window on the facade facing Pendleton Street. The house was moved to its present location in 1935 to make way for the War Memorial, which stands on the original site of the house. The house is a contributing structure in the Old Campus District, University of South Carolina Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and presently serves as the home of Undergraduate Academic Affairs and Counseling.
