English: At least 200 gauges along the waterways of the Central United States—especially the Missouri and Mississippi river basins—reported some level of flooding on March 23, 2019. Thirty-six stations reported major flooding, and another 79 reported moderate floods. Historically high water levels could be a factor in the region for weeks, according to government forecasts.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a false-color image of the Missouri River on March 20, 2019. The combination of near-infrared and visible light makes it easier to see water out of the riverbanks and across the flood plains. While the single image clearly shows extremely wide, swollen rivers, the true impact is best seen with a roll-over comparison of the region before and after the floods. The current flooding has many causes, but the tipping point seemed to be a late-winter bomb cyclone that brought gale- to hurricane-force winds, snow, and heavy rain from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes. In many regions, the warm rain and warm weather during and after the storm caused snow to melt quickly. But since much of the ground in the Upper Midwest and Plains was still frozen, the water could not be absorbed by the soil and mostly ran off into rivers and streams. Ice-choked waterways also created natural dams, causing flood waters to back up.

In a national hydrological assessment released on March 21, 2019, by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, government scientists noted that some parts of the Central U.S. had already received 200 percent of the average amount of rain and snow that usually accumulates through late March. They reported: “The potential for major flooding due to well-above-normal precipitation, snowmelt, saturated soils, and frozen ground is high compared to its historical average across the Upper Mississippi River and Red River of the North basins...The mainstream Lower Mississippi River is currently experiencing major flooding [that] is expected to continue for the foreseeable future, as flood waters move downstream through the system.”
