Summary edit

Description
English: In the second decade of November 2023, heavy rains have caused severe flooding and landslides in Brazil. The states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul have been the worst hit, with at least six casualties and 1,600 people displaced. The Taquari River has overflown, affecting numerous communities, causing road closures, and prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency in 64 municipalities. In just three days, the rainfall exceeded twice the amount expected for the whole of November. The flooded areas near the city of Porto Alegre are visible in this image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 20 November. The Global Flood Monitoring (GFM) of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service is a fully automated system whichuses Copernicus Sentinel-1 data which monitors floods worldwide, providing flood monitoring maps within eight hours of satellite image acquisition at a spatial resolution of 20 metres at global level.
