Mēhamehame Phyllanthaceae Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands Very rare; Endangered Oʻahu (Cultivated) These are new leaves or liko (Hawaiian). Mēhamehame is one of the rarest trees in Hawaiʻi. It is also one of the largest, growing to 100 feet (30 m) tall and over 6 feet (3 m) in diameter. Early Hawaiians used the very hard wood to make weapons. The main cause in their declining numbers is due to the black twig borer (Xylosandrus compactus). nativeplants.hawaii.edu |
