| Description |
fluffgrass, Dasyochloa pulchella, California, White Mountains, Deep Springs Valley drainage, elevation 1859 m (6100 ft). This distinctive desert grass - the only species of its genus - is common and widespread in the warm deserts and summer-wet areas of the southwestern United States southward to central Mexico. This location approaches the northern limit of the species in the southern fringes of the Great Basin, and also the highest elevations for the species. Fluffgrass will germinate, grow, and flower just about any time of year that there is sufficient moisture and warmth. In this northwestern location, it has a bimodal season, flowering after spring rains, and again in late summer and fall when monsoon rains reach this area. After the monsoonal deluge of Summer 2018 in this area (stay tuned...), there was a mass germination and flowering of the species. In the southern parts of its range there is also a November peak in its season. Although perennial, fluffgrass is apparently capable of flowering in its first year if conditions are right. |
