Рельеф местности к югу от Ставангера представляет собой по сравнению с остальной территорией страны равнину и относится к числу самых ранних мест заселения человеком. Люди жили здесь за 8 тысяч лет до Р.Х. Эта местность известна тем, что в 850 г. один из местных князьков - некто Харальд Прекрасноволосый выиграл здесь битву против своих противников и объявил себя королем. Эта местность известна также и прекрасными песчаными пляжами. Этот аэропорт был во время Второй мировой войны с боем захвачен немецкими парашютистами, что стало одним из первых эпизодов немецкой оккупации Норвегии, начатой 9 апреля 1940г.
