Summary edit

Description

(5 September 2006)

The rocks here are Precambrian meta-anorthosites of the Whiteface Anorthosite (Mesoproterozoic, ~1155 Ma). Anorthosite is a coarsely-crystalline, intrusive igneous rock exclusively or dominantly consisting of plagioclase feldspar. Metamorphism has occurred in this region, but it has not changed the plagioclase content.

At the Flume Falls locality, the West Branch of the AuSable River runs along the Wilmington Notch Fault Zone.

Locality: Flume Falls (Wilmington Flume), along Rt. 86, southwest of the town of Wilmington & east of Whiteface Mountain, northern Essex County, northeastern Adirondack Mountains, northeastern New York State, USA (44° 21' 56.52" North, 73° 50' 29.82" West)
