Description
English: Fluorite
Locality: Mahoning No. 1 Mine (Minerva No. 1 Mine), Ozark-Mahoning Group, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin County, Illinois, USA (Locality at mindat.org)
This is an exquisite grouping of interlocked crystals of color zoned fluorite. The crystals, which reach 3 cm across, are a light blue with yellow cores along with thin purple zoning. The crystals exhibit gemminess, and waxy luster. There is also minor but lustrous sphalerite and a 1 cm across, twinned, colorless, calcite crystal. This is a lovely example of Illinois fluorite, so sculptural and unique compared to the more blocky types which predominate, and you can see why somebody who is generally a gem species collector really loved this one so much. The piece is a complete floater, crystallized minutely, if roughly, all across the backside. It is as nearly pristine on front as one would expect of a Smale collection piece; with one rehealed corner cleave near the base that occurred in geologic time, and one small, trivial cleave off a small cube's lower corner. 8.1 x 7.2 x 3.4 cm
