English: Metabentonite & silicate-rich marbles in the Precambrian of New York State, USA.
Marble is a crystalline-textured metamorphic rock composed of calcite (CaCO3 - calcium carbonate). It bubbles in acid and does not scratch glass. Marble forms by the metamorphism of limestone, a common biogenic sedimentary rock. The outcrop seen here is composed of highly impure marbles called "calc-silicate rocks", a truly horrid term that's even worse that the icky lithology terms "tufa" and "hornfels". (Wow.) The layers are highly convoluted from structural deformation. The prominent folded band has been interpreted as a metamorphosed volcanic ash bed (= metabentonite) - the horizon is now dominated by microcline feldspar. A reaction zone between the metabentonite and the host rocks has diopside pyroxene, sphene/titanite, phlogopite mica, pyrite, actinolite amphibole, tourmaline, and minor quartz. The rocks are part of the Gouverneur Marble of New York State's Adirondack Lowlands. The original limestones were metamorphosed at about 1.1 billion years ago, during the Grenville Orogeny.
