English: Footbridge at Pembrey & Burry Port railway station
Erected in 1893, the footbridge connects platform 2 on the camera side with platform 1 and the exit into Station Road. I am grateful to a correspondent who in September 2012 informed me that Network Rail is proposing to remove the bridge by the end of the 2012 to "reduce the risk and costs to the railway", claiming it is lightly used. This proposal has met with fierce local opposition. A Labour county councillor said: "The bridge has played an important part in Burry Port's pedestrian way of life for over 100 years, linking the harbour with the town centre shops. Its removal would be a devastating blow to Burry Port businesses either side of the bridge." He also has safety concerns about the bridge's removal, fearing that people would cross over the railway line as had happened in the past when the bridge was closed for restoration. A Plaid Cymru statement mentioned that the bridge was a classic Victorian design which should be protected and preserved as one of the finest examples of the Great Western Railway's history. |
