Summary edit

Description Forcing the Knave, satirical cartoon from Fun, John Bull unimpressed by a reformed mannikin criminal produced "under glass" by the "Jebb Patent" system (Sir Joshua Jebb) at Dartmoor Prison. The figure kneeling wearing clerical tabs may be the Rev. William Holderness, chaplain at Dartmoor from 1857, fast-tracked by Jebb.[1][2] The so-called "Irish system" of Jebb and Walter Crofton[3] came under political scrutiny, particularly in 1862-3.
