Summary
editDescriptionFormer High Hopes Club House, Kensington-Bailey Center, Iroquois Gas Company branch office - Buffalo, New York - 20201109.jpg |
English: The former High Hopes Club House, 2971 Bailey Avenue at Phyllis Avenue, Buffalo, New York, November 2020. Subtle but unmistakable Art Deco ornamentation adorns the façade of this two-story buff brick edifice dating to c. 1930: ground-floor shop windows interspersed by fluted pilasters with stylized capitals of triangular- and diamond-shaped geometric ornamentation, then still more fluting framing the front entrance and on the architrave above, with fleur-de-lys ornamentation. The building served originally as a branch office for the Iroquois Gas Company (predecessor to modern-day National Fuel), where bills could be paid or new service initiated. After Iroquois vacated it, the building was donated the city in 1973 for use as a community center (the predecessor to today's Edward Saunders Community Center further down Bailey), and at some point later served as a local branch of High Hopes Club House, an employment-skills organization for mentally ill adults. It's currently vacant, but the object of redevelopment efforts through the University District Community Development Association. |
