English: Hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae), Clinton County–Potter County line, within the Forrest H. Dutlinger Natural Area of Susquehannock State Forest.
The hemlock woolly adelgid is an exotic insect pest that has wreaked havoc on forest and stream ecosystems across eastern North America. Small, white, cottony sacs at the base of the needles indicate the insects’ presence. A disturbing find, but not surprising; nearby areas have been infested for several years. For now, the infestation seems to be confined to a few trees at the base of the plateau near the natural area sign. The pest is easily spread, however, and will likely reach the old-growth hemlocks at the crest of the plateau. I've alerted the Bureau of Forestry (Susquehannock District Office) of the find. |
