Description
English: Original caption: "
Inmates of the Fort at Kumasi
"

The inmates of the British fort in Kumasi (Ashanti) during the Fifth Anglo-Ashanti War in 1900.

The pictured persons, sitting, are the missionaries of the Basler Missionsgesellschaft (from Switzerland), which had sheltered in the fort from possible clashes. The white-dressed man with beard (sitting, 2nd from right) is the missionary Friedrich Ramseyer, right beside him his wife. The civilians are Europeans which was refuged in the fort too. Remarkably is the small number of the British military persons and their degree of injury.

English: The British officer in the back row (6th person from left, standing) is Captain Cecil H. Armitage, the later "Commissioner of the Gold Coast Northern Territories" (1910-1920). For his participation on the 1900 campaign he was decorated with the D.S.O. (Distinguished Service Order).
