Description

Com o domínio quase absoluto dos Portugueses nas rotas do Atlântico Norte, a defesa das ilhas não mereceu qualquer cuidado especial. Por esta razão, em 1566, o Funchal acabou por ser vítima dum terrível ataque desencadeado pelos corsários.

E apesar da constante iminência de novo ataque, só em 1614 é que se construiu a Fortaleza de Santiago com o intuito de proteger a cidade dos piratas. Em 1767 foi ampliada e sempre foi usada com fins militares até 1992, altura em que foi cedida ao Governo Regional que decidiu utilizá-la para fins culturais. A partir de então, começou a exibir um programa cultural variado, sob a tutela do Museu de Arte Contemporânea, com uma exposição permanente essencialmente dedicada aos últimos anos da pintura em Portugal. Para além do museu, encontra aqui um restaurante com uma localização realmente privilegiada.
