Actually, this is looking southwest. The drawbridge shown here carried at least streetcars, and ran roughly along the same path as the present-day (high) Interstate 5 Ship Canal Bridge. It spanned this narrow part of Portage Bay (a bay of Lake Union) before the construction of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, part of which project was the (still extant) University Bridge just east of this.
