Summary edit
DescriptionFossil Tree - geograph.org.uk - 801771.jpg |
English: Fossil Tree Unlike most wood fossils this has not been created by petrification. It is more likely caused when the area became submerged millions of years ago and sediment covered the tree base. Water would have gradually seeped in and the minerals it contained eventually replaced the wood to form the fossil. It has the same shape as the original stump, but chemically is more similar to rock. |
