Summary edit

Description

Fossiliferous limestone from the Devonian of midwestern America.

Limestone is a common biogenic sedimentary rock. It is composed of the mineral calcite (CaCO3 - calcium carbonate). The most common variety is fossiliferous limestone, which typically consists of a mix of whole + fragmented fossil shells and skeletons plus finer-grained sediments - typically calcareous mud.

The Devonian-aged rock shown above is a cut & polished fossiliferous limestone that is dominated by corals - solitary rugosans & colonial tabulates.

Locality: unrecorded, but possibly attributed to southern Indiana, USA
