Description

Fossiliferous shale in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

Shale is a fine-grained, siliciclastic sedimentary rock. It is the # 1 most common sedimentary rock on Earth. Common colors of shale are black, gray, earth-tone reddish, and earth-tone greenish-gray. Shale feels relatively smooth to the touch and usually weathers into thin, flat pieces - this is known as fissility.

Seen here is a weathered, soft, gray fossiliferous shale with pelmatozoan stems (= the very light brown-colored objects). These stems supported organisms such as blastoids (= common at this site) and crinoids.
