English: Founders and Benefactors Book of Tewkesbury Abbey: Fol. 19v Gilbert II de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and of Hertford (d. 1295), in hat with feathers, plate armour, with fur-lined cape over heraldic surcoat; he holds his unsheathed sword pointing upwards. Called ‘The Red Earl’ because of his red hair. Three shields.Fol. 20r Gilbert III de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (d. 1314), wears red hat with the three feathers of the Prince of Wales, armour with red cape over heraldic surcoat. He holds an inverted torch [indicating the end of the male line] with a golden globe among the flames. Three shields.
