English: Founders and Benefactors Book of Tewkesbury Abbey: Richard I de Clare, Earl of Hertford (d. 1217), wearing a red bonnet, in armour, with red fur-lined mantle with gold clasps over heraldic surcoat; he holds his sword upright [thus pronouncing the advent of a new dynasty]. Three shields.Fol. 18r His son, Gilbert I de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (d. 1230), was buried at Tewkesbury. He wears a red hat, armour, and fur-lined cape over heraldic surcoat. He holds a green leafy branch, symbolizing his bequest in 1230 of Mythe wood to the monks. Five shields.
