Summary edit
DescriptionFour dark fruit flies (8121177320).jpg |
Like ducks on a wall, four sizes of Fruit fly, species of Drosophilidae. The three smaller flies are an undescribed species of Scaptodrosophila, and the larger one a female Drosophila repleta. Pereybere Mauritius, October 2012. For reference, the grey cylinder is a pencil lead, 0.5 mm nominal diameter. Question 1: Do fruit flies start off small and get bigger, or do they maintain the same size as adults? Question 2: How many species of fruit fly are in the photograph? Thanks to Austral2Ing for the ID, and therefore the answer to one of my questions. These undescribed species of Scaptodrosophila were referred to as Drosophila (Scaptodrosophila) sp. nov. D in surveys for Drosophila on Mauritius in the 1980s. See Drosophila communities on Mauritius and the ecological niche of D. mauritiana (Diptera, Drosophilidae). David J. R. ; McEvey S. F. ; Solignac M. ; Tsacas L., 1989, Revue de zoologie africaine 103: 107-116. |
