Description
English: Four snakes against the Evil Eye, 200-100 BC, Hellenistic. Made by gold and emerald. On a permanent loan to Landesmuseum (Zurich) from the Alice and Louis Koch Foundation. In the Hellenistic period ornately entwined snakes were a a popular motif in jewellery and they are believed to have protective properties against the evil eye. Snake motifs are often found on bracelets which were worn in pairs.
