On the second Nicollet expedition the party leftSt. Louis in April on the Antelope, and they were seventydays in reaching Fort Pierre (Chouteau), in the centre ofwhat is now South Dakota, an average of about eighteenmiles a day. The few steamboats on the Missouri before1840 were clumsy, rough-built craft, usually from 100 to130 feet long, twenty to thirty feet beam, seven feet depthof hold, and drawing from three to five feet of water. Theyhad two boilers sometimes, but only one engine, of the high-pressure type. Five or six miles an hour was the maximumspeed, and often the current opposing progress was sostrong that the vessel would remain quite stationary formoments at a time. At night they were accustomed totie up to a convenient bank, where the crew choppedwood, the only possible fuel, for the next days run.
