Description

Erling Skakkes gate 5 og 9. St. Jørgens Hus til høyre, som ble herjet av brann i 1965. Fraasgården til venstre. Den ble revet i 1967. St. Jørgensveita går nedover mellom nummer 5 og 9.

St. Jørgens Hus ble stitet i 1607 av lensherre Steen Bille og byens borgere. I motsetning til mange andre omsorgsinstitusjoner var ikke dette et hjem for spedalske, men utviklet seg til et hjem for gamle og skrøpelige personer av embetsstand. Etter bybrannen i 1681, fikk stiftelsen den tomta den har i dag. Den eldste av de eksisterende bygningene er fra 1716. Senere kom stiftelsen til å gi veita sitt navn. Veita har hatt ulike navn opp igjennom årene: St. Jørgens strede (1709), St. Jørgensgaden (1790) og St. Jørgens Hospitals gade.
