History says that Charlemagne's army was at the gates of the city and Princess Carcas was at the head of the Knights of the City, after her husband had died..

The siege lasted five years. In the sixth year, food and water were running out. The villagers brought Princess Carcas a pig and a sack of wheat. She then had the idea to feed the pig with the sack of wheat and then throw it from the highest tower of the city outside the ramparts.

Charlemagne and his men, believing that the city was full of food even to the point of wasting pigs fed with wheat, raised the siege.

Legend has it that the Saracen Princess Carcas, seeing Charlemagne lift the siege of her town after five years, ordered the bells to be rung. People then cried "Carcas sonne" [Carcas rings] and this is how the town got its name. A replica of her is in front of the main gate.
