Cambridge Dec 31th 1857.
Dear Annie,
Our new Year wishes come with some remorse on their wings for the neglect of previous messages of love & sympathy [crossed out: for] upon the touching anniversary you silently celebrated some time since.
Our hearts, however, were with you, & we felt all the beauty & holiness of such true faith and unswerving fidelity, and trusted you did not pass that day without promptings of heavenly communion and the [p. 2] consciousness of the beloved presence.
I send you the photograph from Rowse’s picture of my Alice & Edie thinking nothing would be more welcome. I wish it included Annie, but she was rather too young to be attempted.
She promises however to be the genius of the family. She is wonderfully bright in speaking, & in comprehension of all things, and is, withal, the most loving & affectionate of the three. She is the great pet of the house at present, and Rachel thinks far more of her than of the others.
[p. 3] We see Harry daily, and I think he is enjoying his college life, altho’ he grumbles occasionally at his tutor’s exactions. He & Willy have one of the pleasantest rooms here, & seem to have nice companions.
We were glad to have a glimpse of Ellen on her way, & thought she had grown like you.
What do you hear from Mary? We not a word, but young Colburn told me of her fever which I was much pained to know. Has she recovered, and how is her strength? Sam seems interested in his Chapel – naturally. Good bye in haste - Yr affte Fanny.
[p. 4] Best love & wishes to Aunt Lucia. I send her a little lantern for short candle ends when she makes her nightly rounds.
