Description
English: Photograph an oil painting of Frances Shimer (seated), founder of Shimer College, with her adopted daughter Margaretta Ophelia Mason, who was the first director of music at the school (then known as the Mount Carroll Seminary. Miss Mason died of tuberculosis in January 1871 and was buried in the Shimer plot, where Frances and Henry Shimer would later join her. The photograph is included in the Shimer College Collection, which was donated to the Regional History Center at Northern Illinois University in 1979. Under the terms of the donation agreement, literary rights in the collection are dedicated to the public.
