Summary edit

Description
English: The eastern half of the two-building Francis John Apartments complex at 1209 Broadway, Buffalo, New York, May 2020. The two buildings were originally home to Lipowicz Wholesale Grocers; the western building (1201 Broadway), not seen here, was built roughly in the first decade of the 20th century and is a smaller, three-story, flat-roofed building with a matching corbel table at the roofline but otherwise of little architectural distinction. The portion seen here dates to 1912 and was built by architect Władysław Zawadzki, who is responsible for many of the notable buildings in Buffalo's Broadway-Fillmore area. His trademark Renaissance Revival-influenced style and his penchant for arched hood moldings over pairs of windows are both plenty in evidence here, and the geometric forms visible in the decorative masonry work are a popular architectural feature in the area. Stanislaus Lipowicz operated his eponymous business out of both buildings until 1921; later tenants include the Rodak Grocery Corporation (until c. 1945) and J. Burnham's Department Store (1954-1989). It was remodeled in 1998 into an apartment building for senior citizens.
