Notes
English: Painted by Frank Johnston in 1919. This painting shows Curtiss JN-4 “Canucks,” flying above Lake Ontario and the Royal Flying Corps' Beamsville Aerodrome. Commissioned to paint Canadian aviators training for overseas service, future Group of Seven artist Frank Johnston first found his subject to be “a difficult one to get any pictures out of.” After experiencing flight and studying aerial photographs, Johnston transmitted his newfound enthusiasm for “this very fine sport” in canvases like this one.

This is a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art. The work of art itself is in the public domain in its source country for the following reason:
Public domain
This Canadian work is in the public domain in Canada because its copyright has expired due to one of the following:
1. it was subject to Crown copyright and was first published more than 50 years ago, or

it was not subject to Crown copyright, and

2. it is a photograph that was created prior to January 1, 1949, or
3. the creator died prior to January 1, 1972.

Note that this work might not be in the public domain in countries that do not apply the rule of the shorter term and have copyright terms longer than life of the author plus 50 years. In particular, Mexico is 100 years, Jamaica is 95 years, Colombia is 80 years, Guatemala and Samoa are 75 years, Switzerland and the United States are 70 years, and Venezuela is 60 years.

It is also in the public domain in the United States for the following reason:
Public domain

The author died in 1949, so this work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.

This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1929.

The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain".
This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details.
