Description
English: The Frank Sibley House, 159 Linwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York, June 2020. A paragon of the Queen Anne style standing two-and-a-half stories over the southeast corner of Linwood Avenue and Barker Street since 1886, the outstanding features of the house include a boxy motif in the paneling on the façade of the main gable just above and to the right of the entrance portico, echoed somewhat by the design of the vergeboards hanging from the eaves of it and the gabled dormer to its right, as well as the octagonal tent-roofed turret dominating the side elevation whose projecting eaves are supported with decorative brackets. The baskethandle arch crowning the pedimented bay window on the south side of the façade is quite unusual as well. The house was owned for many years by Frank Sibley (1849-1921), a Springville, New York native who had worked his way up from the position of traveling candy salesman with the firms of Hearne's and John Benson's Son to become, in 1873, co-founder and co-namesake of the Sibley & Holmwood Confectionery Company. At the time of house's construction, he was also serving a five-year term as chairman of the Chicago-based National Confectioners' Association, of which he was a founding member. Sibley lived in the house until shortly before his death, living the last six months of his life in a suite at the Hotel Markeen at Main and East Utica Streets. It now houses the offices of the law firm of Drew & Drew.
