editDescriptionFrank Sinatra and Nina Khrushcheva (1959-09-19 UPI photo).jpg |
English: Photograph of American singer Frank Sinatra and "First Lady of Soviet Union" Nina Petrovna Khrushcheva—the wife of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev—during the Khrushchevs' 1959 visit to the United States, a significant event in the Khrushchev Thaw. The photo was taken at an event hosted by 20th Century Fox, inviting the Khrushchevs and major Hollywood figures to attend a lunch and watch the filming of a scene for the musical film Can-Can. After overhearing Nina Khrushcheva express disappointment that she had been unable to see Disneyland earlier in the day, Sinatra reportedly said to David Niven "Screw the cops! Tell the old broad that you and I will take 'em down there this afternoon."
