Description

I visited Frank Slide earlier in February this year and the blowing snow still made the journey in the mountainous regions quite treacherous. The snow did give me a foggy vintage look on film though, so that was a bonus.

Frank, Alberta was a booming coal mining town in 1903 when a large chunk of Turtle Mountain came tumbling down and buried a portion of the town. Frank was once an important stop along the Canadian Pacific Railway line, but not much of it is left anymore thanks to the economic environments that existed.

This place really made me think about our current economic climate where if market demands changed drastically or usage of other fuel sources became more common, our current boom towns would likely be abandoned and become relics like Frank. It's actually not as far fetched as it sounds, Turner Valley was a booming oil and gas town, but is fairly small today and likely nowhere near the economic centre that it once was.
