Deutsch: Das Hotel Russischer Hof auf der Zeil, 1794 erbaut von Nicolas de Pigage (1723-1796) für den bayerischen Geheimen Kommerzienrat und kurpfälzischen Bankier Franz Maria Schweitzer (1722-1812) als Palais Schweitzer, damals einer der reichsten Männer der Stadt Frankfurt am Main. Es wurde 1891 abgerissen für den Neubau der Kaiserlichen Hauptpost. Das linke Nachbargebäude war vormals das berühmte Hotel ROTES HAUS, das 1837 für 365.000 Gulden an die Fürsten von Thurn und Taxis verkauft wurde, die es für 125.000 Gulden zum Zentrum der Frankfurter Post ausbauen. 1867 wird das ROTE HAUS mit seiner Postfunktion durch die 1866 erfolgte Anektion Frankfurts durch den preußischen Staat verstaatlicht und ist nach der erfolgten Kaiserreichsgründung 1871 Reichseigentum. Die nun vom Kaiserreich betriebene Post lässt das Gebäude 1879 erneut umbauen und es mit einer Fassade im Stil der italienischen Renaissance versehen. Dafür musste auch das rechts abgebildete Palais "DARMSTÄDTER HOF" mit seinem markanten klassischen Dreiecksgiebel weichen. Das weitläufige Gebäude Darmstädter Hof war seit 1627 im Besitz des hessen-darmstädtischen Fürstenhauses. Vormals, noch als „Klaus Brommes Hof“, wohnte hier Melanchthon, so oft er Frankfurt besuchte. |
