Summary edit

Description Slow freezing of tissue in a cryostat while preparing a frozen section results in the formation of ice crystals which completely distort and obliterate the normal appearance of the tissue. This can also happen when tissue is put into a container of formalin and the container is inadvertently placed into a freezer for overnight or weekend storage. This artifact does not occur in tissues that are rapidly frozen.
