| Description |
English: Freightliners containers - recycled Now used for storage at Hafren Furnishings, Llanidloes, these containers date from the days when Freightliner was a division of British Rail, prior to nationalisation in 1995. Freightliner introduced the concept of standardised commercial container 'boxes' in the UK during the 1960's & 70's, adopting an idea developed by the US military. These dull looking boxes had a huge impact on the logistics of moving goods in the UK, many dockworker and other jobs were lost, as loose goods had no longer to be transshipped between modes of transport. There was much industrial strife in opposing their introduction but, inevitably, economics prevailed. |
