Notes

"A graceful lady had her portrait painted in front of a column. The column and the curtain intimated at the left picture margin, the light pink scarf casually draped round her arms, the white dress, lace-trimmed at her neckline and with a blue ribbon, all argue for a high social position. And yet the status symbols fade into the background, for the picture is defined by the lady’s look, affectionate yet serious, expressing wisdom but also softness and devotion. The pale pastel tints underline this overall impression. This representation perfectly exemplifies how much the personal aspect is given priority in miniatures, and for this reason they can also fascinate contemporary spectators with no knowledge of the sitter.
