Title |
Frgament of Roman spouted glass jug |
||
Description |
English: Rim fragment, globular or discoid jug with pulled-out spout. It is pale blue/green with light flaking iridescence. There is a funnel mouth, with the rim edge fire-rounded and then rolled in, down and in unevenly. Part of the rim is pulled out and up and is very narrow at its tip with a width of 4.8mm. There is no trace of a tooling mark on the underside of the tip of the rim. The rim is horizontal after the spout and is expanding out. It is 33.5mm high and the wall thickness is 1-2.5.It weighs 2.25g.
Spouted jugs are frequently found on sites in Britain and elsewhere in the north-west provinces. Other jugs with pulled-out spouts are known from 2nd-3rd century and later contexts at Colchester (Cool and Price 1995, 140-41 nos. 1005/6, 1040-41 figs. 8.8-9) and fragments from four blue/green examples were found at Stonea, Cambridgeshire (Price 1996b, 402 nos. 49-51 fig. 131). |
